DEATH to web design

an interesting and telling article
Web Design is Dead

Rainbow with Attitude

The skittles site is a lot of fun to navigate, and very easy to navigate as well. The phone thing in concept was a little weird, but it was nicely designed. I liked the use of the javascript pop up windows to determine the users age before using the site. Another nice use was the informative windows that would pop up and give you tips about how to use certain things and how they functioned or how you could turn off some elements if they bugged you. The other thing i found very interesting is that this entire site must cost them very little to maintain. It’s a facebook hosted site to begin with, then most of the links take you to different places like when you click products, it takes you to the wikipedia page, when you click videos, instead of hosting them themselves it takes you to youtube. But that little skittles box always stays in the corner so you never have to click back to find the navigation again. Very interesting. Skittles definitely is taking advantage of the social networking sites more so than any other site I’ve seen.

Advice?

Greetings fellow bloggers! I post this question to you all because I know there are some very savvy people who are following this blog and perhaps you can help me out.

The issue is with our internal website at work. We post all the essential files in pdf form so all of our clients or employees can download them when necessary. the problem we’re having is that when you click the download button for a pdf, it automatically opens the pdf in your browser. We’ve tried various solutions (I don’t know exactly what they did because I didn’t do it myself) that causes the prompt to enter your password open again and again and again and gets you no where. We need a way to force the link to give you that download/save as prompt instead of just showing it in the browser or doing the crazy password thing. The simple solution would be to convert them all to zip files so it downloads like any other non pdf file… but the problem is there are HUNDREDS of files, and changing each name and link and button in the entire website would be quite the undertaking, and one we dont have time to even consider.

Does anybody know something I can try? Thanks in advance for the help!

So I was reading over some postings about Javascript. One I found that was most interesting was one about using javascript to display passwords as plain text. You need to have access to the computer the passwords are stored on though. When firefox stores your passwords, they are accessible through using the “show passwords” option. However, IE encrypts them in a secure file in order to protect them from prying eyes. However, apparently that can be remedied by the use of some crafty javascript. Here’s the link to the story:

Javascript Password Hack

The question was raised not by someone who wanted to hack into a relative/friend’s computer, but a mother who’s son had died. She needed access to his passwords and needed assistance. Good to know.

Also i found this link with an extensive library of java resources:

Reflections

WordPress is an amazing tool. I can’t believe I’ve only heard of it now. I look forward to playing around with all the functions it has available. The interface is very easy to use, and clean and pleasant to look at. I wish I could write more at this point but I literally just signed up a few hours prior. I feel like I’ve been wasting my time NOT getting more into web design. It’s just with my Graphic Design job AND school… 98% of my time is spent either finishing projects or doing hw. Hopefully that will change and I’ll be able to dive into learning all of this amazing stuff.
